The Nature Turning silently Violent
What happens when a family keeps brutally treating one of its members, say a child, does not feed him with enough food for nourishment, and restlessly keeps consuming him in daily chores? Possibly at first, the child would try to bear it, or find a way to halt the suffering. But what if facing agony remains his only option?
Most probably, he’d turn destructively violent!
Once said Rumi,
“When I am silent, I have thunder hidden inside.”
Indeed, silence is one of the most powerful tools that equips the mind with skills to tackle complex thoughts and find a panacea.
However, where silence could be positively powerful, there is another side of this coin as well. Quietness can turn lethal. It can bring havoc, if not noticed well before time. It is what we see in case of the environmental catastrophes. Less than a century ago, when industrialization was on its verge, production at the cost of natural resources like coal, oil, and gas was polluting the environment. But nature remained silent! except for the occasional cries, in the form of temporary environmental imbalance. This was observed during the London Smog that occurred in 1962 and took the lives of hundreds of people. Due to human beings turning a blind eye to the needs and resentments of nature, such and other environmental disasters have occurred.
In the same line, human beings to date are impairing nature multifariously. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its sixth assessment report has revealed that if emission levels are not immediately reduced, to keep the temperature below 1.5 degrees Celsius, the human being will face huge consequences.
This is already evident in the form of California facing wildfires and record-high temperatures, Madagascar confronting a huge drought, and the Asian subcontinent going through tragic heatwaves.Nonetheless, just as if you don’t acknowledge the grievances of an aggrieved child, he’d have no option but to turn violent, the same is the case with nature. The rising frequency of catastrophic events, along with the shortage of natural resources like water, and food cannot be ignored anymore.
In a nutshell, the idea is that if mankind keeps taking the silence of nature for granted, there could come a time when no efforts would give us back our credentials of utilizing nature for our benefit. Therefore, we need to stop nature from turning silently violent!
